Lesson 4
The River Kwae Bridge

I. Listen to the conversation.

    Chom takes Mr.Dalton for the sightseeing. Finally, Chom's samlor is now at the River Kwae Bridge.

    Chom : Here you are ! The Bridge over the River Kwae.
    William : Is it the same as the Bridge over the River Kwai?
    Chom : Oh,yes. It is the same name. Most foreigners do not use the Thai pronunciation. (1) So they call it the River Kwai.
    William : I see.I've heard about this famous bridge. But I'm not a historian (2) ,so would you please tell me about it ?
    Chom : O.K. During World War II, the Japanese soldiers brought many prisoners-of-war (3) to build a railroad here to Burma.
    William : And then, they had to cross this river. So the bridge had to be built.
    Chom : Yes.The Bridge over the River Kwae was well known as the Death Railway (4) because many thousands of prisoners-of-war died during its construction. (5)
    William : How dreadful ! (6)
    Chom : More than 8,000 prisoners-of-war were buried at the two cemeteries. One you just passed by and the other is at Khao Chong Kai.

    1.เราใช้ Present Perfect Tense กับเหตุการณ์ที่เกิดขึ้นในอดีต และดำเนินเรื่อยมาจนถึงปัจจุบัน

    2.ใช้กับเหตุการณ์ที่เพิ่งจบสิ้นลง
    He's just finished his homework.

    3.ใช้บอกการกระทำที่ผ่านมาแล้วแต่ไม่บอกเวลาที่แน่นอน เช่น
