Gold stars are awarded to library web sites which we think shine out from the dull generality.
Most library sites are now competent at presenting the services they offer. But most don't say anything exciting about libraries or convey much enthusiasm about being online. Our gold stars go to those sites which, in our opinion, possess an extra sparkle that enlivens the visitor's experience. These are the libraries that show a bit of flair in presenting interesting and original content online. Gateshead Libraries still leads the field in our opinion.
Accommodating corporate content and records management systems doesn't have to result in dull and wordy uniformity. But that is precisely the result when these systems are unimaginatively implemented.
Maintenance seems to be a problem in some authorities. There are too many instances to be found of out-of-date events programmes, and dead navigation links are not as rare as they should be. No gold star for those libraries, however splendid their sites may be in other respects.
